Some Of My Favorite Resources For Indie Authors

Today I decided to write a post about some of my favorite resources for Indie authors. I have used all of them myself. The companies and people that I am recommending have been a pleasure to work with.  There are a lot of decisions to be made when you are an indie author just starting out. Even thinking about how your book is going to come together can be very intimidating and stressful. I hope this list will be a good guide to get you started on the right foot.

Print or Ebook

There are many different companies and small publishers that do print and e-book publishing. For me, I chose the following two companies, Smashwords and Createspace.

Smashwords– I chose Smashwords because I saw a segment on a CBS morning show about author Jasinda Wilder getting her start on the e-book platform. To become a ‘Smasher’ all you have to do is set up an account with your bio, an author interview and your books. What I like most about Smashwords is they distribute your books not only to U.S. Retailers like Barnes & Noble and iBooks, they also distribute your books to foreign countries as well. This way you truly get a worldwide approach. I also like that they assign ISBN’s  which relieves another headache in the publishing process. Other perks to Smashwords include the coupon manager, pricing feature and preorder  features. Smashwords also runs a Summer/Winter sale in July where you can adjust the price of your books to attract more readers. All in all, this is a great platform.

Createspace– I chose Createspace for my print books after reading about another indie author who used them. Once again, all you have to do to get started is set up an account. The process for uploading your book is pretty easy and the tutorial will guide you step by step. They also assign ISBN’s and keep track of payments.

 My Favorite Resources

SelfPubBookCovers– I use this site for my book covers. I think their artists are insanely talented and prices are easy on the wallet. The lowest price I have seen is $69 and the highest is over $100. When you buy your cover you get two files, one for your e-book and one for the print version. The best part is once you buy your cover, it is removed from the site, never to be sold again. They also have awesome customer service, I called once and talked to Rob and he was very helpful and nice. This is one of my favorite resources for indie authors.

Formatting

When  I first started looking for a person to format my book, the first place I looked was on Mark’s List on Smashwords. Mark Coker is the founder of Smashwords and he put together a very helpful list of people that format books and do cover art.  After contacting several people, I decided to use Maureen Cutajar of GoPublished.

GoPublished– I am so glad I chose to use Maureen. She does an absolutely amazing job, is professional and courteous, and has a very good turnaround on her work. She is truly a pleasure to work with. When I use her services, I get the bundle offer which is for fiction projects only. The bundle includes your ebook in Kindle and epub formats, a Smashwords ready version and a print ready PDF. This also includes custom designed chapter headings, drop caps and fleurons. This package starts at $200.

Illustrations

JHIllustrations– For my third book, Don’t Eat Your Boogers (You’ll Turn Green), I used Jeanine Henning for my book cover and illustrations. Jeanine is very talented and is a lot of fun to work with. She does book covers for all genres as well as illustrations for children’s books. She is also very professional and gets work done in a very timely manner.

These are the resources I have used during my authoring journey. I hope my list of resources for indie authors is a help to you.

Hello Everyone,

I’ve been working on my first novel which will be out in 2017 and am very excited about it. I thought I would kind of give you a sneak peek about what it’s about. The title is called Through The Pain. Country music superstar Grayson Hutchinson has it all-a whirlwind tour, his tenth number one hit and his second platinum album. He is sitting on top of the world. But all of a sudden his world is torn out from underneath him and his life is changed in an instant. MaCrae Torrinson is a chef to the celebrities, touring with some of the greatest names in music. She also carries a torch for Grayson that will never go out. In one freak event, her world is also crumbling around her.
