Looking for five, fun activities to do during a heatwave? We are smack dab in the middle of summer and temperatures are soaring all across the country. Ice cream is melting as soon as it hits the cone, sidewalks are scorching feet, and parents are exhausted. What can you do when it is just too hot to go outside? These activities are the perfect way to keep your kids entertained indoors on hot, steamy days. The best part? There is a new activity to try each day of the week.
5 Fun Activities To Do During A Heatwave
Color Cubes– Take ice cube trays and fill them with water and food coloring overnight. The next morning take them out and put two or three different colors in a small, quart size zip lock bag. Keep them on the counter just long enough that they started to melt a little bit. Then have the kids come to the table and they would play with the bags, watching the ice cubes melt and the colors mix.
Slip n’Slide– This is a fun, wet activity. Take bubble wrap and taped it to your table with masking tape. Then put a small dollop of baby shampoo at each child’s spot. (This way there would be no tears in little eyes if accidentally splashed.) Next, spray down the bubble wrap with water and let the kids slip and slide with their hands to their hearts content.
More Indoor Fun
Here are some more activities your kids will love.
Scratch n’ Sniff Paintings– For this activity, mix Kool-Aid with a few teaspoons water until dissolved. Make sure you have card stock on hand, preferably white. Put old t-shirts on the kids and let them paint with the Kool-Aid. Once dry, they can scratch and sniff for a fruity smell.
Ice Cream Cone Paint– Make copies of an empty ice cream cone template on white card stock. Mix a 1/2 cup shaving cream with a 1/2 cup glue, adding gradually. Then add a little color with food coloring. Have the kids paint the ice cream on top of their cones. The paint will dry puffy and pretty.
Pudding Fingerpaint– Give each child a sheet of wax paper, add a dollop of your favorite pudding and let them go to town. However, you may want to make sure they are in old clothes as well. What a delicious way to paint!
As you can see, there are many ways to have a fun afternoon. Try these with your kids and see how an afternoon in the A/C can’t be beat.
