Most daycares want their staff to either have a degree in Early Childhood Education or some kind of certification. I can still remember looking around at online colleges and being completely overwhelmed by all the choices. I looked at Kaplan and a few others but they were so expensive. Not wanting to go into debt over my education, I needed the flexibility to study at my own pace and on my own time. In the end I chose Penn Foster College. Here are my Top 10 Reasons Why an Online Early Childhood Program rocks.
Top 11 Reasons Why an Online Early Childhood Education Degree Rocks.
Easy Enrollment-Unlike most online colleges, Penn Foster College has a very easy enrollment process. You just fill out the enrollment form, send in transcripts if you have them, and make a down payment and you’re done. They review your transcript and see if any classes from other colleges can be applied for credit. Within a few days your course materials for your first study module are on the way. You can also access your materials online, but I preferred to have books in front of me to make notes and highlight in.
Textbooks and Materials included-I loved not having to go to the college bookstore and pay extra for textbooks. Everything I needed came with each shipment of study materials. There was no need to worry about a book or study guide being sold out.
Low monthly payments-I liked that the payments for each semester were extremely low, even though they fluctuated a little between semesters. I could always stay on my household budget. I never felt stressed about paying too much for my education.
No interest on monthly payments-I never had to worry about HUGE buckets of debt afterward because there was no interest on my monthly payments. I could breathe a sigh of relief that I wouldn’t be paying off student loan debt for the rest of my life.
Study at your own pace-Science and math have always been my worst subjects in school. It was great to be able to spend the extra time I needed on those subjects to do decent and pass. I wasn’t a fan of Political Science either. I was able to pay for an extension during this semester so I wouldn’t feel stressed and could study and focus as I needed to. However, the classes in Early Childhood came very easy to me and I went through them fairly quickly.
More Reasons Why an Online ECE Degree Is A Great Choice.
Easy access to instructors-When I had questions, it was very easy to contact my instructors or a student specialist who could address my concerns.
Instant test results-Being able to take a quiz or test and get instant results was awesome. Instead of spending days wondering about my grade, I could automatically see what I got wrong and then go and review what I missed.
Still being able to work-Another big perk for me was still being able to work full time. I didn’t have to take off work to go to class and that was awesome. I was able to study for my degree and work in Early Childhood Education at the same time.
Learning Accomodations-As I said earlier, I struggle in math and science. I suffer from dyscalculia. The math class I had to take for my program was algebra and I was freaking out. I called the school and explained my situation to see if any accommodations could be made. They needed a letter from my former learning support teacher and a copy of my last I.E.P. I sent them the information they needed and they switched my algebra class to a more basic math class that covered a little bit of everything.
This was a big deal to me because at regular colleges, you can’t get help for squat. It’s like if they don’t see it physically, it doesn’t exist. It also doesn’t help that colleges don’t hire teachers to have on staff for those with learning disabilities either.
Being in a class of one-I’m not a fan of being in a classroom and asking questions. I have always been afraid of people thinking I’m dumb or an idiot for asking. Being in a class of one and being able to ask questions of my instructors without judgement of others was great. I also liked not feeling like I was in competition with anyone else. I never felt like I had to keep up in the classes that were difficult for me.
Getting Experience-For my first paper, I visited a daycare and observed. Not long after, I was hired at another daycare and stayed in the Early Childhood Education field for six years.
If you are looking to get a degree in Early Childhood Education, online is the way to go. There are so many advantages of going to college this way. No transportation, study when you want and at your own pace and low monthly tuition. It’s the perfect set up for busy Moms and Dads, co-op students (these are students who intern in their field of study to get some experience while in their junior and senior years in high school) and those who are working full time and can’t take off work to go to school.
Another advantage to attending Penn Foster is sometimes they will run enrollment specials. For example, start today for $1. This shows that everyone, no matter your age or income bracket, can afford a great education. I had a wonderful experience during my studies at Penn Foster College and highly recommend their programs. If you are interested in learning more, you can find the links to their ECE programs below.
