Last week we talked about why you should have an author site. We established that it is the central “hub” that you will send your readers to and that it’s your piece of real estate on the web. We also talked about different pages that you should have on your site and where to find information on how to set up your site. This week we are going to talk about why you should have a blog. I chose this topic next because it goes hand in hand with your site. Most people have their blogs on their websites. Otherwise, having a separate blog and website would be confusing.
Why You Should Have a Blog
So, why should you have a blog? Having a blog is very important for an author to share information. A blog is where you can share information on upcoming books, your writing techniques, literary and entertainment topics as well as other interests. For example, one of my favorite authors, Debbie Macomber, shares recipes, the stories behind her books, and lifestyle tips. Another one of my favorite authors, Karen Kingsbury, shares about her upcoming books, events, and foundation. As you can see, there are many things you can share on your blog. It is a place to connect with your readers.
Having a blog helps you build relationships with your readers and gives you content to use in your newsletter. With each blog post you write, you create a connection with your reader. When your reader learns something new and how to go about doing it, they will come back for more. When you share a new resource to make their life easier in some way, you will make a connection. When you share something from your personal experiences like adopting a new pet or something cute your kids did, they will see you more as a person than someone sitting behind a screen. Building relationships are key.
When people think of monetizing their blogs, they immediately think of running ads. This drives me crazy. When I am directed to a blog with tons of pop-ups and ads, it is a total turn off for me. There are many other ways that you can monetize your blog. Things like:
*Selling products like books, courses, and other products directly from your site.
*Using affiliate links (just make sure you disclose that you use them in your post)
*Having a solid relationship with your readers will also help you make money in that they will buy your products.
As you can see, blogs are also an important tool to have in your arsenal. They are a great way to share stories and information with the world and to reach your readers. So, what are you waiting for? Set up your blog and start the journey to reaching your fans today. Do you have questions about starting up a blog? Post a comment and I will try to help you the best I can.
